Afghanistan’s Only Pig Quarantined

Due to strict Muslim values banning the consumption of pork, there is only one pig in all of Afghanistan. One of 42 species of animals kept at the Kabul Zoo, the pig which was given as a gift by the Chinese, has been quarantined for fears of spreading Swine Flu. I’m not sure why I’m blogging this, but the headline made me lol. Thanks Jesse! -Reuters

Envirobank Reverse Vending Machines

The basic function of a Reverse Vending Machine is to be a receptacle for placing all sorts of recyclable containers. For example, throw an aluminum can inside, and the machine removes the leftover fluid, cleans it out, and then squashes it. In-turn, the extra gas spent taking recycled goods from a processing center to an actual recycling plant is removed from the equation, preventing more greenhouse gases from being used in the recycling process. The machine also provides either cash, a coupon or some sort of “prize” for helping save mother Earth. Several of these are being installed on a trial basis in Australia. -TheRedFerret via Gizmodo
